This video is a few years old but it was just put on my radar. Seems everyone else knows the truth about the prison system in the United States, except for those actually in the United States. See this video from a British Television show:
Did you know this? Does it concern you that “The land of the Free” jails more people than anyone else? Even more than Iran and China. Two countries this government wants you to fear, but I ask, “who’s more likely to harm you, Iran’s government or the government right here? Can you think of better ways to spend your money than on bars for shoplifters and drug users? I know I can.”
I think it’s VERY SAFE to say, that American citizens for the most part, love being lead.
Lead to their death that is, by our crazy government and even crazier law enforcement.
Free thinking is vilified and conformance takes it’s place as collectively agreed upon.

So what’s the deal with this country? It’s hard to believe that Americans are somehow fundamentally different from other people on the planet (stupid ‘exceptionalism crap notwithstanding) so what is it in the American character that makes this kind of thing acceptable? Both the high level of criminality, the excess of laws to break, and the approval of such draconian penalties?
What’s wrong with caging shoplifters? Drug use, I understand, is a victimless crime. Unless you count the users themselves. “All research and successful drug policies show treatment should be increased,law enforcement decreased while abolishing mandatory minimum sentencing.” I encourage anyone to read “Saving the Bill of Rights” by Frank Miniter. Our freedoms, liberties, and U.S. Constitution are being trampled on by a progressive government which has invaded every facet of our lives because they think they know, better than us, what is best for us and our families.
Agree, Hugh. But it’s much more sinister than that. The “Renfield Class” in D.C. has made it abundantly clear they don’t give a tinker’s damn about us. It’s their, (and their owners’ club),and we ain’t members. But before anything can be done, we have to get more than 10% to admit it’s broken.

Debate doesn’t work that way. If somebody makes an argument using credible evidence that can stand scrutiny, then your counter argument must either present opposing evidence or proof that the initial evidence is flawed.
I’m afraid you can’t just say, “That statistic is bullshit” and have a credible argument. You can say, “That statistic is out of context or lacking in some proof”; however, since the statistic has proof you must present evidence to counter it:
“The United States currently has the world’s largest prison population. There are over 2 million people in American prisons or jails, up from 744,000 in 1985.”

Population of China = 1,500,000,000
ratio = 5 to 1 population
But, even if there is more, ( vast population difference notwithstanding), they are a communist form of government, this nation says it’s a Democratic Republic. Unless you feel being a close 2nd to China warrants celebration, it still sucks.
Of course this country has found a way to create a “bottom line” by privatizing the prison system, healthcare, military support, energy etc…etc…etc.
