NYPD Bills Mother $710 For Damages to The Police Car That Killed Her Son

NYPD bills slain man for damage to the police cruiser that killed him.

The NYPD officer should have been charged with vehicular homicide after using his car to run the victim over when he was running from them.

I am not saying the victim was an altar boy, but he did not deserve to be killed by a cop who was too lazy to get out of his vehicle to apprehend or question him.

If he did, he may have found out he was not doing anything illegal.

The Huffington Post reports:

In April 2012, Tamon Robinson was struck and killed by an NYPD police car after Robinson was allegedly caught stealing cobblestones from a public housing complex.

Six months later, Robinson’s mother says the city is ordering the family to pay $710 to pay for the damages on the very car that killed her 27-year-old son.

45-year-old Laverne Dobbinson told The Daily News, “We’re still grieving, and this is like a slap in the face. They want my son to pay for damage to the vehicle that killed him. It’s crazy.”

An attorney for the family filed an intent to sue the city and hopes to prevent the department from issuing any repairs to the vehicle as the case is still under investigation. “In my 40 years of practicing law in this city I have never seen anything as heartless as this,” the lawyer told The News, referring to the bill sent to Tamon’s family.

According to police, the car was stopped when Robinson ran into it. Witnesses, however, maintain the car hit Robinson directly.

A witness described the incident, claiming, “They hit him. He flew up and he came down. They backed the car up, and they told him to get up. People were yelling out their windows screaming at the cops, ‘We saw what you did.’ ”

Robinson was rushed to a nearby hospital where he fell into a coma. While unconscious, cops kept him handcuffed to the hospital bed. Six days later, he was declared brain dead and his family made the decision to take him off the respirator.

Rev. Al Sharpton held a rally in honor of Robinson and demanded an investigation, which is still in process, to look into any criminal wrongdoing in the young man’s death.

An NYPD spokesman declined to comment on the $710 bill.

How does the NYPD hold the mother responsible for the supposed debt incurred by her adult son? Even without the extenuating circumstances – if, for example, the police found him painting graffiti on the vehicle instead of being used as an ancillary vehicle braking mechanism – how is the parent responsible for this?

…and why does it double post sometimes?

  4. Common Sense says:

They didn’t ‘decline to comment’ – they said the bill was sent in error by someone who knew nothing of the details.

This has been put on a stop collection…

NEW YORK — New York City officials have apologized for sending a collection letter to a man who was killed by a police cruiser, billing him $710 for the damage his body did to the vehicle.

Tamon Robinson died in April during a police chase in Brooklyn. Officers had caught the 23-year-old digging up paving stones, and he was fleeing on foot when he was hit by the cruiser.

Then, last month, Robinson’s mother got a letter from a law firm retained by the city. It was addressed to her dead son and demanded that he pay for the damage within 10 days.

I LOVE TO SEE ACCURATE STORIES ON THIS SITE!!!!! FYI… NYPD didn’t bill anyone. There is a firm in NY that works through a contract that bills people for reimbursement. That firm billed the family, not the NYPD, they aren’t supplied with the full story, or much of 1 at all. They are bean counters, a billing center.

“According to police, the car was stopped when Robinson ran into it. Witnesses, however, maintain the car hit Robinson directly.”

What? Do they think he was a ram or something? He’s running from the cops, so naturally he headbutts a cop car? Come up with better lies than that. That claim is just plain insulting.
I suppose the 18yo kid they killed a couple weeks back(kid approached a cop doing an arrest and cop simply drew and shot.), grabbed the officer’s gun hand and aimed it at his own head too.

“According to police, the car was stopped when Robinson ran into it. Witnesses, however, maintain the car hit Robinson directly.” we all know who the District Attorny will believe

Again just your run of the mill Pigs.

  11. Michael S says:

She has no legal requirement to pay her adult (27 year old )son’s alleged legal bills!

    WTF?

  12. certain says:

Saying that “it wasn’t the police” because it was a billing firm that sub-contracts collections for the police is a freaking typical cop evasion. The city was responsible for the bill being sent, period. And the fact that they billed somebody who they ran over and killed, for damages to the car, shows just how fucked up they are out there.

  13. shawn says:

Someone submitted the claim to the billing agency.
