How Many Free Passes for Police?

From the L.A. Times, Sunday Jan 22, 2012 –

‘The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fatal shooting by a deputy Saturday in Lancaster.

Two deputies had attempted to stop a man on a bicycle for a traffic violation, but the man fled on foot, sheriff’s officials said.

The deputies chased the man a short distance. When he reached toward his waistband, the department said, one of the deputies, believing he could be drawing a weapon, shot him.

The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies weren’t injured.”

So once again, somebody has lost a son, brother, father, friend, all because some cop thought he was pulling a weapon when he supposedly “reached” for his waistband.

Will the man be found to have been un-armed? Probably. Will the shooting be excused as “justified”? Again, probably. Will this cop be left on the street to murder somebody else with no repercussions at all, even if the autopsy tends to show that all bullets entered from the rear? As depressing and unbelievable as it is, most likely.

If a standard everyday person saw somebody steal his bike, started chasing them, then pulled a gun, shot and killed them, and then told investigating police, “Well, he reached for his waistband, and fearing he was pulling a weapon, I shot him”, do you think they would get away with it? Not a chance. They would be arrested and charged with manslaughter, at the least. But if a cop “thinks” you have a weapon, they are allowed to shoot and kill you. Why is this?

It is time to start some sort of “Public Indictment” that citizens can file. When a cop murders somebody like this, the police department should not be the ones to determine if it was “justified”. This should be done by a commission made up of non-police. Their determinations should be binding. If they say a cop should be forever stripped of the ability to be a cop of any kind, it happens. If they determine the cop should stand trial, the cop takes his chances with a jury just like any other person.

This country was founded by the people, for the people. We need to get back to those concepts.
