Columbia County Deputy Receives Lesson in Accountability from CopBlocker (VIDEO)
Jeffrey Parrish submitted the video above (via the CopBlock.org Submssion tab), which shows Anthony Streetman, a Columbia County Sheriff’s (CCS) deputy, speeding in a CCS patrol car. Jeffrey states in the video that every morning Streetman speeds by him while he’s on his way to work. Fed up, Jeffrey decided to record the deputy to gain an account of his actions. The reaction he got was surprising. Nearly every local media outlet ran a story on what he caught on video and to top it off, the police issued Streetman a ticket. According to Channel 6 News:
A Columbia County Sheriff’s deputy is being disciplined after a citizen recorded video of him speeding in a patrol car.
Columbia County Deputy Anthony Streetman was issued a citation for driving too fast for conditions and faced internal discipline from the sheriff’s department. Columbia County Sheriff’s Captain Steve Morris says the video showed Streetman’s patrol car speeding westbound on Interstate 20 near a weigh station.
Jeffrey wasn’t expecting any sort of accountability for Streetman’s excessive speeds. In fact, I would have expected the department, or Streetman himself, to claim he was on the way to a call, if they didn’t just ignore the allegation all together. After All, Streetman’s a cop and they’re exempt from certain laws, right?
Of course not!
It might be a small victory, but the message that “Badges Don’t Grant Extra Rights” is being heard loud and clear in Columbia County. Furthermore, Streetman should be thanking Jeffrey for protecting him. USA Today just released a video, with statistics, highlighting officer fatalities while behind the wheel. And people think police accountability is only about highlighting bad cops…. nope, it’s about keeping them safe, too!
