“Martial Law coming to Chicago?” by Brett Perry

Below is a post by Brett Perry which was originally posted on the Examiner. It discusses Chicago officials debating the use the National Guard for policing:

Let’s take a quick trip back in time, hop in the Delorian and gun it to 88 because we’re going to May 4, 1970 to the town of Kent, Ohio and the campus of Kent State University.

The week before President Richard Nixon announced the US military had begun an invasion of Cambodia and massive protests erupted throughout the country. The announcement was made on April 30. On May 1 about 500 students held a protest at Kent State and the mayor of Kent called in the National Guard the very next day.

On May 4th, the following Monday, another protest was held despite the efforts of the mayor and National Guard to stop it. Nearly 2,000 students attended the demonstration and were threatened with arrest when they failed to leave. The National Guard then moved in and students began chanting “pigs off campus” and lobbed tear gas canisters at the Guard, that’s when “you know what” happened. They Guardsmen opened fire on unarmed students exercising their right to assemble and their right to free speech.

Back to present day, we have a situation apparently of violence and unrest in Chicago and 2 Illinois State Representatives have a plan

Two state representatives called on Gov. Pat Quinn Sunday to deploy the Illinois National Guard to safeguard Chicago‘s streets.

Chicago Democrats John Fritchey and LaShawn Ford said they want Quinn, Mayor Richard Daley and Chicago Police Supt. Jody Weis to allow guardsmen to patrol streets and help quell violence. Weis said he did not support the idea because the military and police operate under different rules.

The claim is that the level of gun violence is so high in the city that the police cannot handle it. Now I’m willing to wager that their is lots of drug gang problems in Chicago and the violence is between the gangs, just like during alcohol prohibition. Remember how Chicago was during that time with Al Capone and the St. Valentines Day Massacre?

I don’t need to write an entire dissertation to show how this problem can be solved very easily. I could say it in one short sentence and end this article right now. Decriminalize all drugs and allow all citizens to open carry if they so choose.

Statistics prove that in areas where gun control laws are very lax and people can open carry and have guns in the home violent crimes are much lower then places with strict gun control laws like Chicago and D.C.

It’s also a proven fact that violent crime went down significantly after alcohol prohibition was repealed, but people seem to think the opposite would be true today with drugs. Ask yourself one thing, are gangs making huge profits by selling alcohol and cigarettes? Are prostitutes sleeping with people in exchange for some beer? No, they all operate in the black market dealing with anything and everything that is illegal.

I don’t know how much more clearer I can make this. If you were a criminal, would you break into someones house knowing there is a high chance there is a gun inside that house? Or mug someone who has a high possibility of a sidearm clipped to his jeans? Of course not.

We don’t need martial law, we don’t need the National Guard or the US military or even more police officers. We simply need more freedom over our own safety. The government thinks they know what’s best for you and that you do not. But the facts show they are wrong time and time again.

Chicago needs to get smart before Neil Young’s next hit song is called “4 dead in Chicago”

“I’m open to anything that reduces violence. But I have concerns when you mix law enforcement and the military,” Weis said.
