A few weeks ago I went to an anti Donald Trump rally organized for the GOP Convention in Burlingame, CA. This protest, like so many others that have plagued Trump’s speaking engagements during his presidential campaign, was not without police abuse and violence.
As with every protest of this size, the police were present and dressed for a fight. Equipped with heavy body armor, large batons, and firearms the police tried to defend the hotel from the protesters. It wasn’t long until a small group of protesters broke through the police line, causing a long clash with police at the front entrance.
The police weren’t the only people they clashed with that day. Any Trump supporter was fair game as well and I witnessed people assaulted because of their political beliefs. Objectively it was terrifying. The very people who gathered to express themselves were at the same time violently oppressing anyone with an opposing view. While this is the logic of politics, it speaks volumes about those who still willingly participate in the two-party system.
Regardless of the fact that the area was essentially a police state, the police did little to protect anyone who wasn’t involved with the hotel or the GOP Convention. This is not surprising as the police are not paid to protect us, but are in fact the domestic military of the establishment.
Near the end of the action, one of the guys who assaulted the man and burned his flag was hit by an egg thrown by one of the Trump supporters. The police broke it up before they could fight and detained the kid dressed in black. When he thought he was about to go to jail, the anti fascist guy started begging the fascist pig police to arrest the other kid as well, trying to essentially subject him to the very fascism he claimed to oppose.
Shortly after the police declared an unlawful assembly for the area and ordered everyone to leave. Several people were abused and arrested, including a woman who was standing on the sidewalk. Officer Venikov shoved her for no apparent reason. When another officer said the sidewalk was OK for people to be on, I demanded an apology but it was to no avail.
After recalling the action in my head and reviewing the video footage it became apparent that the anti fascists were just as oppressive as the people they oppose.
As a police abolitionist, I try to limit my encounters with police to when I am policing them with my camera and/or doing outreach. I don’t call them when my neighbors are too noisy or the homeless guy decides it’s the night to sleep in the alley behind my house. I look for alternatives to the states monopoly on protection and don’t perpetuate it senselessly.
That’s what these individuals should have done as well. They had a grievance and decided to solve it with fists. This is not always the best solution, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. Even in a libertarian paradise, where everyone abides by the non aggression principle, there is the possibility for violence. When that became impossible, due to fascist law enforcement, they should have waited for another opportunity to settle their differences or just let it go. It was only a raw food product it wasn’t that serious in the first place but that just goes to show the maturity of this individual.
Instead of choosing not to participate in fascism, which is the best way to end anything, the anti-fascist attempted to use fascist state violence against his opposer, a trump supporter, in order to gain some form of retribution for throwing an egg at him. The Trump supporter doesn’t really know better, after all he supports Trump, so talking to the cops is what you would expect. However, the antifascist kid singing like a canary was not. He obviously knew better because he told the fascist cops he wanted to invoke his 5th amendment rights. Yet he still felt it necessary to beg equal treatment under the fascist system and demand the fascist pigs arrest the egg thrower as well.
If someone had stolen his property and destroyed it in front of him I wonder how many fascist pigs he would’ve called then?
