UPDATE I (10:20PM – mountain): via WFFAA Dallas:
Dallas Police Chief David Brown has confirmed at least 11 police officers were shot and at least four were killed in an attack by two snipers in downtown Dallas at a protest of officer-involved shootings across the country on Thursday night.
Brown said in a news conference at around 11 p.m. they currently have a suspect cornered in the parking garage of El Centro College in downtown Dallas and are negotiating with him to surrender.
Multiple police officers have been killed during a protest in Dallas over shootings by police of black men in Louisiana and Minnesota.
Three Dallas police officers were killed and eight others were wounded, Dallas Police Chief David Brown and the City of Dallas said in separate statements. One Dallas Area Rapid Transit officer was fatally shot, the agency tweeted. It’s not clear if Brown included the DART officers in his tally.Brown said two snipers shot the 10 from elevated positions during a protest. Two officers are in surgery and three are in critical condition. No suspects were in custody.Three other DART officers were also shot. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening, DART said.
‘Everyone was screaming’The shooting happened as protests were underway about two blocks from Dealey Plaza. Video showed the crowd suddenly sprinting away.CNN affiliate KTVT reported that two Dallas officers were shot. CNN could not immediately confirm that information and it’s not clear if they were referring to the DART officers.
While I do not advocate for violence against police, we’re better off winning people’s minds, this is exactly what many of us here at CopBlock.org have been saying would happen if we DO NOT CHANGE PEOPLE’S MINDS.
The police need to address the issues that have left people with little to no trust in them. There’s a huge gap between what police think they do and what a large number of other people believe they do.
With the past few years brining record number of deaths at the hands of police it was – SADLY, VERY VERY SADLY – only a matter of time before those who feel victimize by police respond in the same manner in which they’re being attacked; violently.
Hopefully the violence can end and we can focus on actually helping and protecting people, enough is enough.
