Cops Assault Cameraman on Suspicion that He May Be A Terrorist

The following video was submitted by Marcus Potter after he was assaulted from behind by two constables with the UK police while he was filming another officer standing around on the street. After the attack Marcus was detained under terrorism law, searched and identified. After everything was said and done, the police released him with a warning that continuing to film may result in him being arrested on suspicion that he was a terrorist.

Date of Incident: 27 July 2016
Officers Involved:

  • PC Hicks,
  • PC CW Brown 1624
  • PC Lyons 231593

Scotland Yard +44 20 7230 1212

I was peacefully filming Police Constable Hicks in the Piccadilly Circus when he decided to radio for two other officers, PC CW Brown # 1624 and PC Lyons #231593, to jump on me from behind. They being blind sheep agreed to do exactly that and this is what happened. I was moved towards a wall by PC Lyons and as if that weren’t bad enough PC Lyons took my camera phone out of my hand before turning it off. Then I was unlawfully detained under section 43 of the Terrorism Act by PC Lyons for the purposes of a search PC Brown searched me along with my bag and then ran my details through the system by PC Lyons via his sergeant who he contacted by phone (I was still under unlawful detention as this happened).

When they found nothing illegal on me and discovered that I was not wanted I was then given a search form before being given some stern words of advice about filming Police officers. This included a warning that further filming could result in my arrest on suspicion on being a terrorist under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000. I was then allowed to go on my way and did so.

There are so many things wrong with this incident but I’ll start with the obvious. A police officer conspired with two if his cronies to have a cameraman jumped because he didn’t like the direction the camera was pointed. Afterwards the gang of thugs restrains the man, invades his privacy and threatens him with charges under terrorism law if he continues his peaceful behavior. Ironically the behavior exhibited by the law enforcement officials during this confrontation is terrifying itself. After all these are the same people who are supposed to be preventing kidnapping and terrorism, instead they participate in behavior that terrorizes the community they claim to protect.
