Police celebrating a $10 million budget raise the only way they know how – Beating and macing protesters in the streets of Portland Oregon.
On October 12th, 2016 protesters took to the streets outside of Portland Oregon’s City Hall. Protesters gathered here after police violently removed people from inside City Hall earlier that day.
A little more context to this is probably needed.
In the past month or so in Portland Oregon, things have been getting a little tense at city hall. Charlie Hales has been pushing for a new contract with the Portland police, even though the current contract does not expire for another year. Hales has a unique status in Portland, he is the Mayor as well as the police commissioner. As you can imagine, that has created a bit of a conflict of interest with Mr Hales. Hales will only be mayor for about three more months though, as Ted Wheeler was voted to be the new mayor a few months ago.
The most interesting piece of the new police contract is the $10 Million increase in personal budget. Hales claims the city is in dire need of more police, and to do that he must raise the starting wage for police in the city. There is no evidence of an officer shortage in the city, in fact crime is lower than it’s been in decades. If Portland is low on officers then why did they sign a contract with Apple to have Portland Police Officers at their downtown store 24 hours a day?
As you can see, there’s something not quite right about this police contract being fast tracked. So when it came up on the agenda for the city council meeting, people showed up to voice their concerns, per city rules. The problem occurred when Mayor Hales told the people they would not be allowed in the room where the meeting was to be held. This being a blatant violation of city rules, people got up set. As yelling and chanting began, police in riot gear appeared like clockwork. They issued the order for people to vacate the building and when people refused the cops attacked.
After everyone was out of city hall and the incident hit social media, people who were not there before began gathering near city hall. The street on the west side of city hall was eventually occupied and that is when the police moved in for round two.
Out of the nine people arrested on that day, six were cop blockers. You can see three of them in this video, the other three were Sara Long, Mike Bluehair and myself. Portland Police have once again proven themselves to be nothing more than thugs with grudges and too much power. They have targeted people that film the police, blatantly lied at a sergeant’s level, and used unnecessary and unwarranted force upon peaceful people.
All of this begs the question: If these are the kinds of cops this city employs, why the fuck do we want more of these bastards on the streets?
