Foreclosure Results in Homeowner Shot

ST. ANN, Mo. (KMOV.com) — Police say officers were trying to serve an eviction notice when they shot the homeowner at a house in St. Ann on Wednesday.

Police said multiple officers went to serve the eviction notice at a home in the 10,000 block of St. Anthony Lane around 12 p.m., but the resident barricaded himself inside.

St. Ann police were called to the scene and tried to talk with the suspect, but he still would not come out.

Police said officers then began sending tear gas into the home. That’s when the suspect began firing shots at police.

Authorities said the St. Ann police chief returned fire, hitting the suspect in the elbow.

The suspect was transported to DePaul Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and now faces criminal charges.

No officers were injured.

According to police, the ordeal started back in March when Fannie Mae started foreclosing on the home.

Police said the man lived alone and was employed as a fence builder, but for some reason stopped making mortgage payments.

Neighbors said he was also distraught after the recent death of his mother.

“It’s kind of surprising, he’s had some problems over there, he’s been a really good neighbor, he’s going through some hard times right now, losing the house,” said neighbor Mark Voelkerding.
