Former Florida A&M football player Jonathan Ferrell was involved in a car accident early Saturday morning around 2:30am and went to a nearby house seeking help. He knocked repeatedly at the door of a home and startled the occupant who did not recognize Ferrel. The resident then called 911 to report what she perceived as an attempted break in.
When the police arrived, 24 year-old Ferrell approached them at a fast pace. A taser was deployed by one of the officers “unsuccessfully”. Officer Randall Kerrick then shot Ferrel several times. Ferrell died at the scene.
Officer Kerrick is being charged with voluntary manslaughter and is being held on $50,000 bond. The other two officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave.
