Former Manchester, NH Police Officer Connare Sentenced for DWI Crash

Former Manchester, NH police officer David Connare, convicted of misdemeanor level reckless conduct for crashing his car at high speeds while intoxicated on interstate 93, has been sentenced in Hillsborough County Superior court North in Manchester, NH to one year in the Hillsborough County House of corrections with six months suspended with good behavior, however due to judge brown he may be granted home confinement and work release immediately. Judge Kenneth Brown recommended administrative home confinement and work release for former officer Connare; he most likely will serve little to no time in jail.

A jury in August 2013 found Connare innocent of felony second degree assault, and felony vehicular assault, and Judge Brown ruled the state had not proven a misdemeanor charge of driving while intoxicated. On Thursday October 17, 2013 Judge Brown told Connare, “Being a police officer, you should have known better than to drive after consuming an intoxicant.” He also stated he believes a loss of driver’s license would be appropriate, but is beyond his control. Connare’s lawyer Eric Wilson sought a complete deferred sentence of one year, followed by two years suspended. Connare, who resigned his position as a Manchester police officer and head of the patrolman’s union after the October 16 2012 incident, was ordered to report Friday October 18, 2013 at 9 AM to the Valley Street Jail but assistant Merrimack county attorney Waldron said Connare could be approved for immediate release upon reporting to the jail and could be home the same day. Connare was originally charged with felony DWI, second degree assault, and felony reckless conduct. He injured two victims because he chose to drink and drive.

This is not the first incident where former officer Connare has been involved in a crash resulting from drinking and driving. The judge said the issue of restitution still has not been settled with the victims who were severly injured. One of the victims received a check from former officer Connare in June, prior to trial, which she used to purchase a used car. Connare apologized at the sentencing stating he normally wants to help people, that is the kind of person he is. Connare further stated he deserved to be punished but added he lost a career which he loved, and said he has lost everything. A 21-year veteran of the Manchester police department, he is still eligible to receive a yearly pension of $37,000.

After the sentencing, the victim said she was appreciative of the work the prosecutor and the court have done in this matter. If convicted of the felony charges, Connare would have been facing 3 and 1/2 to 7 years on each of the felonies and $4,000 fines on each charge. Connare will be on probation for one year after he completes house arrest. Again a police officer gets off with a slap on the wrist for drinking and driving and causing serious bodily injury. No justice served; the thin blue line is exactly that. If a non-badge-wearer were charged with these charges, the judge would throw the book at him or her.
