Barry Cooper was arrested this past Tuesday on his way to a University of Texas Libertarian Longhorns meeting. The reason for his arrest was due to a KopBusters video (see above). KopBusters is a group of people, including Barry, who set up stings on officers. In the video they catch a Liberty Hill, TX captain, George Nassour, stealing $45 dollars and failing to file a report. It’s a great video by KopBusters and you’d think it would be a matter for internal affairs. But Barry was arrested for filing a false police report in relation to that video. Even though they don’t know who actually placed the call.
For those that don’t know and what makes this an even more interesting story. Mr. Cooper is a former law enforcement officer and his career is quite impressive. According to Wiki:
Mr. Cooper began his law enforcement career with the Gladewater Police Department as a police dispatcher. He was later hired by the Big Sandy Police Department where he trained his own narcotic detection dog as an interdiction officer in East Texas. Cooper logged nearly one-hundred drug arrests and a record marijuana seizure.
Barry’s talents were soon recognized and he was contacted by the Permian Basin Drug Task Force located in Odessa, Texas where he participated in joint operations with the ATF, DEA, FBI, U.S. Military, and Border Patrol. According to a former West Texas Drug Taskforce Boss Barry Cooper is “probably the best narcotics officer in the state and maybe the country.”
During the course of his eight year career as a drug enforcement officer he made more than 800 drug arrests, 50 vehicle seizures and confiscated over $500,000 in cash and assets.
Then after trying marijuana, realizing he liked it, he quit being a NARC. He married his drug dealer, Candy, who he credits for showing him how harmless pot is. He began feeling guilty for arresting hundreds of people and decided to help marijuana users. In short he’s created the DVD series Never Get Busted Again, KopBusters, ran/running for office, amongst other things. Barry has made it his life to fighting the system.
So back to his arrest. The unofficial reports are of him being charged with filing a false police report and that cops found two bits of marijuana cigarettes in his home. This is a clearly retaliation for catching an officer red handed using their own tactics. KopBusters embarrassed the department and Barry has been doing so for years. In fact one story stated that Barry knew this would happen and went ahead with it anyway. Kudos. Maybe that’s because he knows how law enforcement is allow to break the law in order to enforce it.
I recently read a story how police use an 18-yr old girl to test hotels, bars and liquor stores on underage purchasing laws. Though a minor buying liquor is also illegal. How about when police send a female cop out undercover as a prostitute? Isn’t prostitution illegal? Though the only ones arrested are the ones attempting to get laid. You can go on an on how cops break the law but it seems to be over looked in the name of ‘justice.’
Why is it right for police to break the law in order to catch a criminal but when KopBusters uses the exact same tactics as police use against police, well then, that seems to be a criminal act. I decided to call the departments involved, the Williams County Sheriff and Liberty Hill police, and get comment. I couldn’t reach anyone at the County but did shoot this video of my conversation with Chief Williams of Liberty Hill.
Notice how the chief states that his crooked Captain is still on active duty. He also states that there is no connection between his department and Barry’s arrest, which I find confusing. Considering the false police report was filed in his jurisdiction. He goes on to say that it’s never okay for police to break the law. If only that were true.
This is clearly an attack on KopBusters and Barry Cooper. The cops are saying, like with a number of things, that it’s ok for them to break the law as long its for the better good but not for you to do so. That’s wrong and if you feel the same way please give Chief Williams a call 512.515.5409. Let him know that what Barry did was good and that not punishing the captain is wrong. After all his captain is a thief.
