Cops Profile Grocery Store

Store owners asked for help with a shoplifting problem, cops come in and profiled the store’s patrons. I found this article via Twitter and thought it needed further explanation. This is what UpNorthLive.com reported:

MANISTEE COUNTY — An increase in shoplifting concerns at one Manistee County grocery store, led to Michigan State Police Troopers going undercover.

On February 5-6,  police and the SSCENT Narcotics Team conducted an undercover operation at Glen’s Market in Filer Township.

Glen’s managers reported an increase  in shoplifting complaints and requested the help.  During the sting operation, officers spent about 8 hours inside the store during critical hours.  During the time officers made nearly half a dozen arrests.

One person was arrested for drug possession and an outstanding warrant, one person was arrested for shoplifting, two minors were arrested for possession and three people were arrested for probation violations.

During one incident about $1,100 in suspected drug money was seized.

State Police Officers were assisted by Manistee City Police.

So just to be clear, a store owner asked the police to assist them with a shoplifting problem. So they brought in the Narcotics Team to conduct an undercover sting operation? Are you kidding? What do Narcotics cops know about shoplifting? How about just getting some cameras installed?

So what happens next? The Narcotics teams does what its trained to do, profiles peaceful people who aren’t harming anyone, well maybe themselves, and makes three arrest for drug charges. Not shoplifting, though they did manage to nab one guy for that. Everyone else arrested probably looked like a stoner and ended up having probation violations, which could of been for failure to pay the state.

This here should be a lesson to us as to why a private security force is better than cops with a monopoly on force. Had this business called a private security force you can be sure that this business and its patrons would be better off. The private company would of focused on the issue at hand, shoplifting, by having uniformed security guards on duty and installing cameras in the store. The store owners shoplifting problem would go away and the patrons would continue to shop there without fearing for someone running their name or searching their persons.

Instead armed thugs came to the store, profiled peaceful people (who just wanted some food) and made several more arrest for victimless crimes than shoplifting. In a domino affect contributing to over crowed jails, an over burdened court system, waste of resources, not to mention the price tag this sting operation cost tax payers. With the majority of the arrest that day being non violent non victim crimes, did the police to any good?
