This Badge meets ’s listing requirement in that this badge is no longer used by the authorities (Texas Rangers & Texas Department of Public Safety) and that it has been discontinued from service and is no longer manufactured. This Badge meets listing requirement in that it is no longer issued by the Texas Rangers or worn by the Texas Rangers. It is considered obsolete and no longer an official badge. It has no legal authority and does not constitute any authority legal or law enforcement. It is strictly being sold as a collector's item, which it is. This Gold Captain’s Texas Ranger Badge come with a letter of Authentic & Description from David W. Alford (previous Official Authorized Maker of Texas Ranger Badges by The Texas Department of Public Safety and the most notable expert on early Texas Ranger Badges) describing this Texas Ranger Badge.
Mr. Alford states in this letter:
“I HAVE EXAMINED THE BADGE ACCOMPANYING THIS LETTER AND FIND THE FOLLOWING:
THIS BADGE IS A ‘SADDLE STYLE’ TEXAS RANGER CAPTAIN’S BADGE MANUFACTURED BY SIMMANG’S OF SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS. THIS BADGE BEARS CHARLES SIMMANG’S HALLMARK ON THE REVERSE. THIS PARTICULAR STYLE WAS USED BY THE TEXAS DEPT. OF PUBLIC SAFETY FROM 1938 UNTIL 1957.
THE BADGE IS GOLD PLATED WITH BLACK ENAMELING IN THE LETTERING. BASED ON OTHER EXEMPLARS I HAVE SEEN FROM SIMMANG’S, THE MATERIAL FROM WHICH THE BADGE WAS MOST LIKELY MADE IS GILDING METAL WHICH HAS A HIGHER COPPER CONTENT (86%) THAN THE BRASS COMMONLY USED IN MODERN BADGES (70%).
THE JOINT, PINSTEM AND CATCH ARE ALL PROPER AND CORRECT. SINCERELY YOURS, signature of David W. Alford, DAVID W. ALFORD”.
This letter is on Mr. Alford letter head that states,
“DAVID W. ALFORD” and “MANUFACTURER OF FINE WESTERN JEWELRY/ HOUSTON TEXAS”.
