RARE Documented Civil War USS Powhaten Eggert & Sons Marine Chronometer #468Up for sale today is this RARE Documented Civil War Eggert & Sons Marine Chronometer, probably made by Parkinson & Frodsham. This 2 day chronometer has documented records showing this clock being placed on trial on October 18th 1856 for one year. It was then sent to the USS Powhaten in November 1857 and received next by the USS Gettysburg in June 1865. It was received by the USS Lackawanna on April 30th 1880. The top of the page has the matching #468 Eggert & Son title. This is a great piece of US history as well as a very high quality chronometer. Clock runs good and keeps time as it should. The outer box is not original to the clock and it is missing the lid which many ships captions removed for better viewing. Full brass gimbal interior holds this chronometer in a nice mahogany brass bound case. CONDITION
Good running order, good motion & poise, helical spring reasonably symmetrical with a little color variation in the blue, plates dull, some corrosion & speckle, a few nicks or scratches, dial has lost most of its silvering and has some fingerprint impressions, as well as all the letter blacking gone, requires satin refinishing, blacking & replating, box is original lacking cover & hinges, the remaining hardware is there.
